Linen is one of the most famous woven materials. Even in Ancient Egypt, clothes from linen were worn by the pharaohs and their governors.
To create clothes, linen was made thin, while maintaining the strength of the fibers so that the product was sock. In addition, flax was used as a commodity exchange item. Where and when the linen was first made is unknown.
With the advent of industrial production, flax began to make fabrics that are still in great demand all over the world. Today, the quality of dressing is so high that a simple, coarse linen is more a relic of the past than a given.
The production of linen fabric is a rather long and laborious process. Flax production wastes are not subject to recycling, as they are used in other industries.
Flax and its properties
Flax in itself is a plant, fibers are extracted from its stems, from which flax yarn is spun. Then linen fabric is woven from it, after which it is bleached and dyed. The result is a linen cloth with a smooth surface and a light matte sheen. The less characteristic small nodules on it that are found on the canvas in the form of inclusions, the higher the quality of tissue production. Their complete absence, softness, plasticity and uniformity of the canvas indicates that before you is flax of the best quality. Raw linen is usually gray or cream in color.
Flax is a very whimsical plant. He needs a humid climate, moderate heat without a hot and bright sun. The environment where flax has grown affects the quality of the fabric - the material will differ even by touch.
Linen has long been considered a “Russian” fabric, because in our latitudes there are many favorable places for comfortable growth.
Flax possesses high strength, wear resistance, durability and is little polluted. It is an absolutely environmentally friendly material with excellent hygroscopicity and breathability. Clothing made of linen contributes to the natural thermoregulation of the body and is great for the summer season and hot climate.
Mostly linen fabrics have plain weave of threads. Visible changes in the structure of the canvas indicate possible "additives". Today on sale there are such mixed fabrics as linen with silk, linen with wool, linen with viscose, linen with elastane. The presence in the canvas of other fibers gives the flax additional properties - less creasing, noble shine, elasticity.
Linen Care
Caring for linen products is quite simple. Since this is a natural material, it shrinks, so fabric must be decoded before cutting. Plain fabrics of pastel shades and natural colors can be safely washed at high temperatures. Colored and linen with a pattern is better to wash at a temperature of no more than 40 C. Spin at low speeds in any case, otherwise it will be difficult to smooth the fabric later.
WTO - why is this necessary?
Flax WTO is recommended to be carried out only at high temperature conditions with the "steam" function turned on, since the main drawback of this remarkable fabric is its high creasing rate, which is not so easy to handle. The care of products made from mixed fabrics depends on the composition: if, for example, it is linen with silk, then you need to look after the product as if it were silk.
We sew from linen fabrics
Modern linen can boast of very high quality, softness, plasticity and comfort in wear. Thanks to these properties from flax, you can sew anything you want - from models of laconic cut to sophisticated and intricate, with many details and draperies.
Sewing from linen fabrics is a real pleasure. They are malleable, capricious, easy to cut.If the model is simple, you can do without sweeping, just chop the parts with tailor pins and sew.
Linen canvases come in different flakes. Therefore, do allowances when cutting a little more than usual. Cut them to the desired width manually or while processing slices on the overlock. If the fabric is thin and loose, do the hem by hand, and reinforce the points of embedding the zipper with non-woven fabric.
There are practically no restrictions on the choice of models, it all depends on your style, image, clothing habits. You can beat any simplest model from plain linen with accessories or buy fabric with a bright print or coupon pattern. Comfort and enjoyment is guaranteed.
